The biggest event in motorcycle service, the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix (WTGP) 2025, recently took place in Iwata, Japan.
This global competition came back after seven years, bringing together the best technicians in the world. While we congratulated the global winners, for us in the Philippines, the event was special because of our champion from Mindanao, Leo Dumalag.
The Global Champions: WTGP 2025
The WTGP final was held on November 19, 2025. Twenty-two technicians from 19 countries competed. They were tested on their repair skills and customer service under the theme "Master Your Craft, Make Your Mark."
Two champions won the top global titles:
Sport Model Class: Won by Liam Coffey of the United Kingdom.
Commuter Model Class: Won by Juan Cruz Lunad Rocha of Argentina.
A Strong Technical Performance
Although the final results were based on total scores, the technical scoreboard showed just how skilled the Philippine representative was.
Competing as Entry No. 20, Leo Dumalag gave an excellent performance in the Technical Skills category. The scoreboard showed he completed almost every task successfully.
Engine Start Failure: Finished perfectly (Items 1-6).
Inspection & Maintenance: Finished perfectly (Items 17-26).

In the Engine Malfunction section, Leo missed a perfect score by only one item. Out of 26 total checkpoints, he missed only Item #13. This specific task was the Yamaha Diagnostic Tool (YDT) check that was required after changing the fuel injector. Aside from that single missed step, his technical work was nearly perfect.
National Pride: The Road to Japan
Leo's journey to the world event began in May 2025 at the Yamaha National Technician Grand Prix (NTGP) in Alabang. The competition saw the country's best technicians compete for the national title.
Leo Dumalag, who works for 3S CDO 2 Cycle Marketing in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro, won the contest. He showed great technical skill and genuine care for the customer. His win earned him the title, a brand-new Yamaha Mio Aerox S, and the honor of representing the Philippines in Japan.
The "Ratchet Poet" of Cagayan de Oro
Leo is also known as the "Ratchet Poet." He comes from CDO, a city known for being friendly. He proved that a great technician knows how to fix an engine and how to treat a customer well. His trip from a local shop to the global stage shows the high quality of talent we have here in the Philippines.

A Great Legacy
The WTGP 2025 is finished, but Leo Dumalag’s participation was very important. It showed the world that technicians from the Philippines are world-class. He showed Yamaha's goal of Kando—making customers feel satisfied and excited.
To Leo Dumalag: Thank you very much! Your impressive performance was an inspiration. You made Cagayan de Oro and the entire Philippines proud.
